# Yuzhong Delivers 500T Gantry Crane for Mega Infrastructure Project

A 500-ton gantry crane. Delivered and fully commissioned in 18 weeks. That's the headline.

Behind it sits a project that pushed Yuzhong Group to the edge of what even seasoned crane manufacturers consider a tight turnaround — a custom MG series unit built for a deep-water container terminal expansion somewhere off the coast of Southeast Asia. The terminal needed heavy lifting capacity for modular quay wall sections. Big ones. Each module tipped the scales at 450 tonnes, and once you factor in rigging gear plus safety margins, anything under 500 tonnes was a non-starter.

Yuzhong took the order, engineered the crane, manufactured it, shipped it, and had it lifting loads — in under five months. Not many shops can claim that.

## Project Overview

The port authority had a problem. A good problem to have, but a real one nonetheless.

They were expanding a major deep-water container terminal, and the design called for pre-fabricated quay wall modules — massive concrete-and-steel assemblies that would form the new berthing face. Each module weighed up to 450 tonnes. Try finding a crane that lifts that kind of weight outdoors, in salt-laden coastal air, with a 36-meter span to clear the entire quay wall width, and you start to understand why the RFP sat on several manufacturers' desks without takers.

Most suppliers bailed at the load spec. The ones who didn't bail couldn't hit the delivery window — 20 weeks, hard stop, because the rest of the construction timeline depended on those modules going in on schedule.

So the port authority needed four things from whoever won the contract:

- Single-lift capacity above 450 tonnes (500T rated, to cover rigging and margin)
- 36-meter span, no intermediate supports
- The crane had to survive continuous outdoor duty in a C5-M corrosive environment — think salt spray, monsoon humidity, coastal wind
- Delivery plus full commissioning inside 20 weeks

Not a shopping list for the faint-hearted. It needed a manufacturer with real engineering depth and the factory floor space to back it up.

## Yuzhong's Solution

The design team got to work fast. Within 24 hours of order confirmation, preliminary layout drawings were in the client's inbox. That kind of speed matters when your customer's construction schedule has zero slack.

The result was a custom MG series double-girder gantry crane — 36-meter span, 28-meter lift height, A5 working class per FEM. Nothing off-the-shelf about it. Every dimension came from the actual site conditions at the port.

Here's what made the design work:

| Parameter | Specification |
| --------- | ------------- |
| Lifting Capacity | 500 tonnes |
| Span | 36 meters |
| Lifting Height | 28 meters |
| Working Classification | A5 (FEM) |
| Travel Speed | 25 m/min |
| Hoist Speed (Main) | 2.5 m/min |
| Hoist Speed (Aux) | 10 m/min |
| Corrosion Protection | C5-M marine coating |

That dual-speed hoisting setup deserves a mention. The main hook crawls at 2.5 m/min when you're spotting a 450-tonne module onto its bearings — you need that kind of precision. But for lighter rigging moves, the auxiliary hook runs at 10 m/min, which keeps cycle times reasonable across a long shift.

Siemens motors. SKF bearings. Standard. The whole steel structure got a C5-M marine-grade anti-corrosion coating system — the kind designed for installations where salt spray and high humidity are just facts of life, not edge cases.

## Execution & Delivery

This is where the rubber meets the road.

Manufacturing ran out of Yuzhong's facility in Changyuan, Henan Province. Ten weeks on the production floor. Every major component went through ultrasonic and magnetic particle inspection on the weld joints. The main girder was actually pre-assembled at the factory — bolted up, checked for dimensional accuracy, then torn back down for shipping. It's the kind of step that adds time upfront but saves days of headache on-site.

Then came logistics. The main girders each split into three sections. All structural parts rode a combination of heavy-duty flatbed trucks and cargo vessels. Total shipping weight: over 380 tonnes across 12 transport loads. Moving that much steel across international shipping lanes without a single damaged component isn't luck — it's planning.

On-site assembly took four weeks. Two weeks ahead of schedule.

The Yuzhong field engineering team ran the full reassembly and commissioning, and the crane passed every load test without drama. 125% static load — held. 110% dynamic load — clean. The kind of results that make a project director sleep better at night.

The port authority's project director had this to say:
> "The 500T gantry crane from Yuzhong performed exactly as specified. The commissioning team was highly professional, and the crane has been operating without any issues since day one. The on-time delivery played a direct role in keeping the terminal expansion on schedule."
Fair to say the port authority got what they paid for.

## About Yuzhong Group

[Yuzhong Crane](http://yzcranes.com.) Group started in 1978. Forty-eight years later, the company ranks among China's top crane manufacturers — covering everything from 5-ton workshop units to 500-ton heavy-lift gantry cranes, all built to ISO 9001, FEM, ASME, and CE standards.

The export numbers tell part of the story: 120-plus countries and regions. Ports, energy plants, mines, steel mills, construction sites. Siemens motors, SKF bearings, and marine-grade anti-corrosion coatings come standard on every unit.
